To pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of his 150th birth anniversary, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Indian High Commissioner Taranjit Singh Sandhu unveiled a bronze bust of Gandhi at Temple Trees in Colombo on Wednesday (02). The 42 inches bust of Gandhiji in meditative pose has been sculpted by Padma Bhushan Awardee sculptor Ram Vanji Sutar, who has to his credit the world’s tallest bronze statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel – 552 feet high.
During the occasion, two commemorative postal stamps on Mahatma Gandhi issued by Sri Lanka Post were also released by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and High Commissioner Taranjit Singh Sandhu.
Other dignitaries and high officials who graced the occasion included Minister of Power, Energy and Business Development Ravi Karunanayake, Minister of Plantation Industries Navin Dissanayake, Minister of Postal Services and Muslim Religious Affairs M.H.A. Haleem, Minister of Ports, Shipping and Southern Development and Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff Sagala Ratnayaka, Deputy Post-Master General, Sri Lanka Post Mr. D.A.R.K. Ranasinghe and Director, Philatelic Bureau Mr. S.K. Meegama.
