Mahindananda remanded until Sept 22

MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage who was arrested by the CID over money laundering charges, has been remanded till September 22 by the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court.

Aluthgamage, who was the former sports minister, was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) earlier today. 

Police said that Aluthgamage was arrested on charges under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act after a statement was recorded from him. 

He was ordered further remanded by after being produced before Additional Magistrate Nishantha Peiris today.

The CID is investigating a complaint lodged against him by Wasantha Samarasinghe, the Convenor of the Voice Against Corruption Movement.

The CID informed court that investigations have uncovered that the former Sports Minister had purchased a house on Kynsey Road in Colombo by spending a sum of Rs 27 million from money earned through unlawful means. 

The court was also informed that the aforementioned payment was made through his account in a bank branch located at the Parliament Complex and that another sum of Rs 10 million had been earned through illegal means. 

The CID states that information regarding more properties obtained using this money have been also received.
