Prices of 47 essential drugs have been reduced under the first phase of the National Drug Policy, Health Minister Dr Rajitha Senaratne said.

He said that initially these 47 drugs including those used by heart and diabetic patients will be reduced and that more prices will be slashed later.

Once the Gazette on reduced prices of medicine is issued, pharmaceutical companies will not be allowed to revise the CIF prices.

The formula to reduce drug prices was announced during the 39th Prof. Senaka Bibile commemoration held today (23) at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute (SLFI) Auditorium, organized by the State Pharmaceutical Corporation.

Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne was the chief guest of the occasion while mementos were handed over to the employees of State Pharmaceutical Corporation as well.

The State Pharmaceutical Corporation (SPC) was established in 1971 according to a proposal of Professor Senaka Bibile.
