Attempt to smuggle sea cucumber to Sri Lanka foiled

About 200 kg of sea cucumber, an endangered coral reef species, which was meant to be smuggled to Sri Lanka was seized at Mandapam near here and two youths arrested in this connection, marine police said.


Acting on a tip-off, Marine police personnel seized the dried sea cucumber stocked by two persons, with the intention to smuggle them to Sri Lanka, they said.


The duo has been arrested, they added.


Sea cucumbers, classified as endangered species and their harvest banned under the Wildlife Protection Act, are in demand in South-East asian countries.
