We have found it difficult to find enough elephants for this year’s devala perahera, Basnayake Nilame of Kataragama Maha Devalaya D.P Kumarage says.

Kumarage pointed out this came after the Department of Wildlife’s move to transfer the domesticated elephants to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage recently.

Kumarage made the observation during a press conference held with the participation of the members of the Domesticated Elephant Owners’ Association on Monday.

“There are some 39 domesticated elephants at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage at the moment,” he said.

The Basnayake Nilame also said that he will inform this to the President and the Prime Minister to resolve the issue without any delay.
