The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has recorded a statement from Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, Sri Lanka’s Minister of Regional Development.

The police spokesman’s office said that he was questioned for nearly 5 hours yesterday in connection with the murder of veteran journalist and the founding editor of the Sunday Leader newspaper Lasantha Wickrematunge.

However, when further inquired on this the police spokesman’s office stated that they could neither confirm nor deny that such a statement was recorded.

Wickramatunga, editor-in-chief of the Sri Lankan weekly The Sunday Leader, was murdered on his way to work in January 2009.

In September last year, Sri Lankan police exhumed the body of the slain journalist after a court granted permission for the police due to contradictory post-mortem reports.
