Dates fixed for trial over Shashi Weerawansa’s passport

The Colombo Magistrate’s Court has set aside dates to hear the case against former Minister Wimal Weerawansa’s wife, Shashi Weerawansa, who has been charged with providing false personal information in order to obtain a diplomatic passport.
Chief magistrate Ranasinghe Bandara today issued notice on three witnesses in the case to appear before the court on May 25, 30 and 31 in order to give testimonies.
Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris, appearing for the Attorney General, stated that information has been received that the suspect possessed two national identity cards, two birth certificates, two passports and two names.
Peiris stated that therefore the suspect needs to be investigated under the supervision of the Criminal Instigations Department (CID) and requested the court to order her to appear before the CID on the last Sunday of each month.
The Deputy Solicitor General pointed out that the suspect had been granted bail with the aforementioned condition, however the decision was reversed after 3 months as she was instructed to appear before the magistrate’s court once every 3 months.
The Colombo Chief Magistrate stated that a decision on this would be announced in the future.
Meanwhile, the court case filed against former Minister Wimal Weerawansa for causing civil unrest at a demonstration made in front of the United Nations (UN) head office in Colombo, during the visit of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, was taken up today.
Cinnamon Gardens Police informed the court that investigations pertaining to suspects involved in the demonstration have been concluded.
