Man arrested with gold worth Rs 4.2 million at BIA

A Sri Lankan national has been arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake for attempting to smuggle gold worth over Rs 2.4 million out of the country this morning. 

The Sri Lanka Customs media spokesman said that the 30-year-old from Wattala was preparing to board a flight to Bangalore, India at 3.00am today (24) when he was apprehended by officers. 

They found 32 pieces of gold, weighing 400g and valued at Rs 4.2 million, wrapped in carbon paper and concealed in his hand luggage.

Following the customs inquiry, a fine of Rs 50,000 was imposed on the suspect while the gold was forfeited, he said.
