According to the current political culture, anyone could become a politician and enter the Parliament if he intends to spend money, under the preferential voting system, the President says.

The president was speaking at the opening ceremony of ‘Deshapalana Shasthralaya’ (political academy), inaugurated by the SLFP Youth Front today (19) at the SLFP Headquarters.

President Maithripala Sirisena pointed out that the possibility for any inadequate person to become a Parliamentarian has widened due to the existing preferential voting system.

The President also went on to say the era where the persons who praised their leaders to achieve personal gains has ended. “The society is today ready to say, ‘no it is not’ if we say ‘it is’,” he said.
