‘Black Sunday’…

March 7, 2021

Catholics island-wide marked the ‘Black Sunday’ declared by the Archdiocese of Colombo by wearing black attire to the Masses today (March 07).

The Catholic Archdiocese of Colombo decided to declare today a ‘Black Sunday’ against the lack of justice for all those who died and were affected by the Easter attacks. Accordingly, the Archdiocese requested Catholics in the country to dress in black for the Sunday Mass today and to engage in a silent protest outside the churches following the Mass.

Speaking at the peaceful protest held before the St. Anthony’s Church in Kochchikade after the Sunday Mass, Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith said that they will continue to carry out this protest campaign until justice is done.

Meanwhile, several monks of the National Bhikku Front had also joined in the protest. Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), and several civil society organizations also declared support for the protest. Photos by: Madawa Kulasooriya
