A labour officer attached to the Matara District Labour Office has been arrested for accepting a bribe of Rs 30,000 in the Matara town.

The Commission to Investigate into Allegations of Bribery and Corruption stated that he was arrested in an operation carried out based on a complaint from a resident of Thihadoga.

The labour officer had reportedly asked for a bribe of Rs 60,000 in order to refrain from taking legal action against a private company for failing to make payment to the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) for two its employees.

He was arrested by bribery commission officers while soliciting half of that amount as an initial payment and will be produced at the Matara Magistrate’s Court today (28).
