Parliament adjourned as JO complains over time

April 6, 2017   12:01 pm

Parliament has been adjourned following a tense situation and heated arguments over insufficient time allocations for ‘Joint Opposition’ MPs to speak during the debate on the UNHRC resolution.

The Speaker had granted Joint Opposition leader MP Dinesh Gunawardena 30 minutes in order to deliver a statement on the topic during the debate today (6).

However, several joint opposition MPs protested claiming this was not sufficient and had also behaved in an unruly manner.

As a result of this, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya decided to adjourn Parliament till tomorrow (7).
