MoU signed to help develop Tuna industry

May 18, 2017   03:29 pm

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the ministry of exports and fisheries to help the tuna and blue fishing industries in the country, today (18).

The agreement also highlights the importance of sustainable fishing practices, which was signed by the Minister of Fisheries, Mahinda Amaraweera and the Chairman of the Seafood Export association.

Amaraweera stated that the removal of the ‘GSP +’  trade concession, which will happen tomorrow (19), will benefit the fisheries industry the most, given that it was the hardest hit due to the removal of the concession.

He added that the increase in the export supply does carry the risk of the price of fish increasing – but that measures are currently put in place to reduce the degree to which this will occur.
