GMOA strike extended to 24 hours

GMOA strike extended to 24 hours

May 21, 2017   03:21 pm

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) says that a 24 hour strike action will be launched at government hospital across the country from 8.00am tomorrow (May 22), based on several demands including the SAITM issue.

A spokesman for the association said that the 12-hour strike previously announced for Monday has been extended to a 24-hour strike.

GMOA Assistant Secretary Dr. Nalinda Herath stated that emergency services and essential medical services will be carried out tomorrow and assured that they will make sure that no patient lives are lost as a result of the strike.

He further said that the government should take full responsibility for this temporary inconvenience to the public.

The strike is being launched over the attacks and arrest of university student protesting against SAITM, no arrests being made over the grenade attack on the Sri Lanka Medical Council, failure to implement the law on the accused in the shooting incident connected to the former CEO of SAITM, suppression of trade union leaders and the lack of a proper investigation into the complaint filed by the GMOA against the granting of permission for SAITM to utilize government hospitals.
