Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his condolences to Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena regarding the numerous casualties and destruction caused by flooding on the island, the Kremlin press service reported.

“President Vladimir Putin sent a telegram to the President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, expressing his condolences regarding numerous victims and mass destruction in different parts of the country,” the statement said.

Putin stressed that “in Russia they share the pain of those who lost their relatives and friends in this natural disaster and expect a speedy recovery of the wounded.”

The number of those killed in the floods caused by torrential rains in Sri Lanka reached 100 people this Saturday, while 99 people are reported missing.

Authorities in Sri Lanka, where torrential rains continue for two days, have already appealed for assistance to the UN and the countries of South Asia.
