MP Champika Ranawaka stated that due to the current rise in global temperatures, areas in Jaffna could experience semi-desert like conditions within the next 50 years.

He added that the government should focus on developing parts of Jaffna strategically, while protecting the environment in the surrounding area.

The minister made the statements during a media briefing held today (2), informing the media of the plans made to remove un authorized settlements found near rivers, irrigation lines and the city areas.

Ranawaka stated that the lack of proper environmental assessment when developing parts of the country have contributed to the recent catastrophes’ that have occurred.

He further stated that the lack of proper warning systems is an issue, and that a proposal to implement proper framework to warn the public about such incidents in the future has been proposed.
