Railway employees to go on strike from midnight tomorrow

October 19, 2017   02:29 pm

Railway Department employees announced that a strike will be staged from midnight tomorrow (20), in wake of the government not meeting several promises made to Railway department Trade Unions on employee salary allowances.

The Secretary of the Locomotive Operating Engineers Union Indika Dodangoda stated that train drivers, railway controllers and station masters will all be participating in the strike.

President of the Railway Controllers’ Union Lal Ariyaratne stated that the strike will be conducted as the government failed to keep to several promises agreed upon following the recent strikes.

Accordingly, it was decided to provide an additional Rs.300 to all Railway Department employees through their monthly salaries following discussions held between Railway Trade Union heads and the Secretary to the Prime Minister on September 20.

“As the government has failed to provide the additional Rs. 300 this month, the Railway Trade Unions have decided to stage a strike tomorrow” Lal Ariyaratne said.
