Eraj Fernando of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) has been elected as the Mayor of the Hambantota Municipal Council with the support of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).

The municipal council was won by the United National Party (UNP) at the recent Local Authorities Election.

During the open ballot held today to elect the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the council, the members of the Podujana Peramuna voted in favour of Eraj Fernando, who was elected from the UPFA.

The inaugural session of the Hambantota Municipal Council was held on March 28, however the appointing of a Mayor was postponed that day due to the lack of quorum.

Fernando is the former Mayor of the Hambantota Municipal Council.
