The Supreme Court set the date for the hearing of the appeal filed by the former Police DIG Vaas Gunawardena and five others, who have been sentenced to death, requesting the acquittal of the murder charges against them.
The appeal was taken up today (25) before a two-member judge bench consisting of Justices Priyasad Dep and Priyantha Jayawardena.
Accordingly, the court issued an order to take up the appeal for hearing on January 29 before a five-member judge bench.
The six defendants including the former DIG Vaas Gunawardena and his son Ravindu Gunawardena have mentioned in the petition that they have been convicted and sentenced to death for the alleged abduction and murder of a businessman named Mohamed Siyam by a Colombo High Court Trial-at-Bar.
They have claimed that the verdict of the case issued by the Trial-at-Bar to be unlawful, hence seeking an order from the Supreme Court issuing the acquittal of the charges against them.
