Two arrested with foreign cigarettes worth Rs 1.9 mn

A Sri Lankan businesswoman and another person arriving from Dubai have been arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) this morning (21), for attempting to smuggle in foreign cigarettes.

The apprehended businesswoman is 52-year old resident of Hettipola and the other is 32-year old male from Nattandiya area.

Customs officials attached to the BIA have seized 39,000 foreign cigarettes in 195 cartons with the suspects.

The value of the cigarettes is estimated to be over Rs 1.9 million, according to Customs.

Sri Lanka Customs is conducting further investigations on the matter.
