The Chairman of the Elections Commission Mahinda Deshapriya says he will resign from his post if Provincials Council elections are not held before the Presidential election, this year.

He stated this at a press conference held in Colombo, today (28).

Although there is no issue with holding the Presidential elections early, if the provincial council elections are not held before the 9th of November, the Elections Chairman says that he will resign from his post as a mark of objection.

He will remain within the elections commission, but not as the chairperson, he further said.

Deshapriya says that he is making this statement as a citizen of the country and the delay of elections hurts his heart as well.

He says that he was continuously involved in the discussions related to the elections and although leaders of all political parties say that the provincial elections must be held, some act according to their own agenda.

Chairman added that ‘Deshapriya will not remain on this seat to hold election according to agendas of others’.
