Teenage girl and boy hit, killed by train

A teenage girl and a boy have reportedly died after being hit by a train at Nawalapitiya.

Police said that a 15-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy were killed in the incident.

According to police, the two teenagers were walking on the rail track at Jayasundara in Navalapitiya at around 9.10 a.m. this morning (2) when they were hit by a train traveling from Colombo Fort to Ella.

The deceased have been identified as Lalanga Harsha Kumara, 16, and Piyumi Bagya Sewwandi, 15, who are both residents of Nawalapitiya.

Police said that the teenage boy and another girl were walking along the railway track while the other girl was on the phone and walking ahead of them.

The teenage boy had spotted the oncoming train and managed to push the girl walking beside him away from the track and had attempted to save the girl in front of him when they were both hit by the train.

The bodies have been placed at the mortuary of the Nawalapitiya Hospital.
