Sixteen persons have been taken into custody from various areas on suspicion following a special search operation carried out last night.

Police said that one person who is suspected to have maintained links with a terrorist group is also among the arrestees.

The arrests were made in areas including Wattala, Bandaragama, Thirappane, Theldeniya, Balangoda, Matale and Vavunathivu.

Meanwhile, 18 arrests were made in a search mission carried out by the Special Task Force at Crow Island in Mattakkuliya area following a tip-off received by the Organized Crimes Prevention Division (OCPD) last night.

After searching 85 houses and 380 persons, the STF had arrested 18 persons whose identity could not be confirmed and those who possessed mobile phones containing suspicious data.

The suspects have been handed over to the Mattakkuliya Police Station for further investigations, while the seized mobile phones were taken into the custody of the STF.
