President Maithripala Sirisena says that he will never allow any agreements with foreign nations that would harm the country to be signed while he is still in office.

The President made these comments during the concluding programme of the “Let’s Stand Together for the Country” (Rata  Wenuwen Ekata Sitimu) Monaragala District Programme at Bibila Public Ground today (6).

President Maithripala Sirisena says that he will never allow any agreements with foreign nations that would harm the country to be signed while he is still in office.

He said that it is being reported by the media and widely discussed these days that the government is going to sign various foreign agreements which would betray the country.

He said that there is talk about the status of forces agreement (SOFA), there is talk about an agreement with Millennium Challenge Corporation and also talk about a Lands Bill, which they say is not suitable for the country.

“Regales of these discussions and discourse, in this country where you have appointed me as the President I would like to very clearly state that during my tenure I will not allow any foreign agreement unsuitable for the country to be singed.”

“I will not allow such a thing to happen,” he said.

He said that certain foreign powers are attempting to turn Sri Lanka into their hub or a center for certain activities and that they want to use this land for their own purposes.

However, he emphasized that he will not allow the signng of any agreement that would allow any foreign power or foreign country to interfere or harm the country’s sovereignty.
