SLFP to nominate own presidential candidate

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) will be fielding a candidate for the upcoming presidential elections, stated SLFP spokesman MP Weerakumara Dissanayake.

According to the parliamentarian, the General Secretary of the party, MP Dayasiri Jayasekara has informed the Elections Commission on the decision.

The SLFP had previously held several rounds of talks with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) on the possibility of forming an alliance and supporting the SLPP candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

However, it has now been reported that both parties had failed to reach a final agreement through the discussions.

So far 12 political parties have notified the Elections Commission that they will be putting forward candidates for the upcoming presidential election.

Meanwhile the Elections Commission is to hold a special discussion on Monday regarding the presidential poll and the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha election.
