Chamal Rajapaksa places deposit for Presidential Election

October 4, 2019   04:58 pm

A deposit has been placed with the Election Commission on behalf of UPFA Hambantota District MP Chamal Rajapaksa for the 2019 Presidential Election.

According to sources, a bond has been placed on behalf of Chamal Rajapaksa to contest the presidential election as an independent candidate and not as a candidate of a registered political party.

Chamal Rajapaksa has reportedly already obtained a letter from the Secretary General of Parliament confirming his position as a Member of Parliament, which is a document required to contest the poll.

A former Speaker of Parliament, Chamal is the elder brother of SLPP candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The Court of Appeal is expected to announce its decision this evening regarding the petition filed challenging the citizenship of former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

The Presidential Election 2019 is scheduled to be held on November 16.
