11 including PS members arrested for election violence

Sri Lanka Police says that 11 suspects including two local politicians have been arrested so far for engaging in incidents of violence relating to the Presidential Election.

Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara, speaking to Ada Derana, stated that two Pradeshiya Sabha members are among the arrested suspects. 

He further stated that a Special Election Secretariat was established at the Police Headquarters following the official announcement of the 2019 Presidential Election.

The spokesman said that presently 10 complaints pertaining to incidents of election related violence have been received and that 14 violations of election laws have been reported from various parts of the island.   

The 11 arrests made thus far were based on the complaints and the violations, he said.

However, the police spokesman noted that a peaceful environment is currently being maintained with regard to the upcoming election.
