Patali Champika Ranawaka granted bail

Former Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka has been granted bail by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court while his driver was ordered remanded.

He was ordered released on a cash bail of Rs 25,000 and two sureties of Rs 500,000 each.

Court ordered him to report to police once a month and also ordered him to refrain from influencing the witnesses.

Meanwhile the MP’s driver, Thusitha Kumara, who was also arrested in connection with the incident, has been remanded until January 06, 2020 by the Colombo Magistrate.

The UNP MP, who was arrested and remanded over a road accident in Rajagiriya, was produced before the court this morning (24).

He had arrived at the court premises at around 9.00 a.m. today accompanied by prison guards, for the hearing of the case filed against him, Ada Derana reporter said.

Ranawaka was arrested by the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) on the night of December 18 at his official residence in Colombo in connection with a road accident at Rajagiriya in 2016.

The Attorney General had advised the Senior DIG of Colombo to arrest and produce the former minister before the court for causing grievous injury to a person by a rash and negligent act and for switching drivers in a road traffic accident.

The UNP MP had been further remanded until today (December 24) by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court.

However, when the case was taken up today the attorneys representing the MP filed a bail application, which was accepted by the court.
