Businessman caught smuggling in gold worth Rs 12.8 mn

A Sri Lankan who attempted to smuggle in gold from India has been arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) this morning (17).

Officers of the Customs Narcotics Division had made the arrest at the arrivals terminal of the airport.

The suspect had concealed 12 gold biscuits, weighing 1 kg 400 g, in his shoes, stated the Sri Lanka Customs.

The arrestee is a 36-year-old businessman from the Maligawatte area in Colombo.

The value of the smuggled in gold has been estimated to be over Rs 12.8 million.

The stock of gold has been confiscated and a fine of Rs 1.3 million has been imposed on the businessman.
