Met. Dept. warns of severe lightning during thundershowers

The Department of Meteorology has issued an advisory for severe lightning during thundershowers in several provinces and districts across the island.

 

The advisory will be in effect until 11.00 p.m. today, the Meteorology Department said.

 

Accordingly, thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur particularly in Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva and North-central provinces and in Colombo, Kalutara and Kurunegala districts in the evening or night.

 

Temporarily strong gusty winds up to 70-80 kmph also possible during thundershowers.

 


Sea area:

 

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas extending from Mannar to Matara via Puttalam, Colombo and Galle in the evening or night and a few showers may occur in the sea areas extending from Trincomalee to Hambantota via Batticaloa.

 

Winds will be variable in the direction in the sea area extending from Mannar to Galle via Colombo and winds will be North-easterly in the other sea areas around the island.

 

Wind speed will be (20-30) kmph. 

 

The sea area around the island can be moderately rough at times.
