Wanted murder suspect dies in shootout with police

A suspect, wanted in connection with a murder in Monaragala, has been killed in a shootout with the police, Police Spokesperson SP Jaliya Senaratne said.

A team of police officers had launched a raid acting on a tip-off received with regard to the suspect’s hideout in Ittekatuwa area of Monaragala.

However, the suspect had opened fire at the police officers who, in response, shot back at him.

The injured suspect had died upon admission to the Sirigala Hospital in Monaragala.

The police officers have seized a hand grenade, a firearm and a knife which had been in possession of the suspect.
