Five killed in car-tipper truck collision

Five persons have died in a collision between a car and a tipper truck transporting sand, the Police said.

The motor accident reportedly took place at around 04.05 am this morning (22) at Walakumbura area on the Alawwa-Kurunegala road.

A tipper truck en route to Alawwa from Kurunegala has collided head-on with a car that had been heading to the opposite direction.

All the passengers in the car including the driver were admitted to the Alawwa Base Hospital in critical condition, however, they succumbed to injuries.

According to the police spokesperson, the victims had been returning home after attending a funeral service in Warakapola. They were employed in the construction of the Central Expressway.

The driver of the tipper truck has been placed under the custody of the police.
