Covid-19: Over 5,000 active cases still under medical care

Confirmed Covid-19 cases in Sri Lanka topped the grim milestone of 9,000 on Wednesday (28) as 335 more persons were tested positive for the virus.

The Department of Government Information said all the new cases were linked to the Minuwangoda-Peliyagoda cluster, which has so far registered 5,731 infections in total.

Twenty-seven of them have been detected from quarantine centres while 202 of them were identified as close contacts of earlier cases. The remaining 106 were confirmed to be contacts of coronavirus patients connected to the Peliyagoda Fish Market.

As per Epidemiology Unit’s statistics, 5,111 active coronavirus cases are still receiving medical treatment.

Out of the 9,205 infections confirmed in Sri Lanka, 4,075 in total have made complete recoveries to date.

The country’s Covid-19 death toll hit 19 on Tuesday (27) as three infected persons including a 19-year-old fell victim to the virus.

Sri Lanka witnessed the highest daily count of Covid-19 cases on the 23rd of October with a record total of 866 fresh positive cases. The second-highest was recorded on the 6th of October with 739 infections.
