Total number of police officers who are infected with Covid-19 stands at 60 as of this morning (31), says Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana.

Joining ‘Derana Aruna’ programme earlier today, he said nearly 400 close contacts of these patients were directed to quarantine facilities at police training schools in Kalutara and Kundasale.

In addition, between 1,000 - 1,100 police officers have been placed under self-isolation at their respective barracks.

The novel coronavirus began to spread among police officers as the heads of Police Messes and cafeterias were exposed to the virus when the new cluster linked to Peliyagoda Fish Market emerged, the police spokesperson explained. He added that police constables and sergeants had visited the marketplace to buy stocks of fish required for their respective Messes.
