Suspect attempting to flee custody killed in police gunfire

An individual has been killed in police gunfire in the Veyangoda area this morning (December 28), stated the police.
The deceased is a suspect wanted for the dismemberment of an informant of a drug deal by cutting his hands off on December 19. In addition, he is also connected to several robberies in the area, Police Media Spokesperson Ajith Rohana said.
Reportedly, he had attempted to flee police custody when he was shot by the police.
DIG Rohana said, “Early this morning, the suspect had visited the Halgampitiya area in the Veyangoda Police Division with a group of officers from the Peliyagoda Crimes Division for an operation. It was reported that the suspect had passed away at the hospital following an incident that took place there.”
He added that a police officer was also injured as a result of an action taken by the suspect.
The deceased is a 37-year-old male resident of Banduragoda, Veyangoda named Nishatha Kumarasiri.
Reportedly, two cases in the Gampaha High Court, a case in the Marawila High Court, and a case in the Gampaha Magistrate’s Court are pending against the suspect.
