Provincial Council polls must be held - EC Chairman

The Chairman of the Election Commission of Sri Lanka says that he is of the stance that the provincial council elections must be held.

The Election Commission states that it is its position that the Provincial Council elections should be held.

Election Commission Chairman Attorney-at-Law Nimal G. Punchihewa mentioned this at a discussion held at the Elections Commission premises this afternoon (January 12).

The discussion was held between the heads of media institutions and the members of the Election Commission. This is the Commission’s first meeting with the heads of media institutions since its appointment in December 2020.

The Commission Chairman emphasized that the holding of the provincial council elections is a matter of urgency.

The provincial councils are already in operation and are being carried out by the Governor and several officials, he pointed out.
