Further to the comment yesterday by Sri Lanka’s main opposition party, the United National Party Chairman that it has not decided under which symbol to contest the upcoming general elections, party general Secretary Tissa Attanayake said they plan to hold several meetings to make a final decision.
The Working Committee of the UNP is to meet on February 11 to take a final decision, Mr. Attanayake said.
He added that the Working Committee is expected to hold discussions with the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and the United National Front (UNF) constituent parties that include the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Mahajana Wing of former Minister Mangala Samaraweera, the Democratic People’s Front of Mano Ganeshan and Rauff Hakeem’s Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC).
“After discussions with the JVP and others, we will plan the strategies to contest the elections. They are already exchanging views,†Mr. Attanayake said.
He also said that all party officials and organizers representing all the provinces will meet on February 9.
Meanwhile media reports say that UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has decided to contest the general elections under the UNP’s elephant symbol as some party seniors have suggested, but under the UNF ticket. The UNP is considering distancing itself from the JVP-Sarath Fonseka alliance under the Swan symbol, party sources said.
