Schoolgirl drowns while river bathing; teacher arrested

A female student has drowned while bathing in the Walawe River at Kalthota in Balangoda, stated Police Media Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana.

Reportedly, the 16-year-old student had gone bathing in the river along with 15 other students from a school in Kalthota.

The female teacher who accompanied the students has been arrested over the incident, the police spokesman added.

Kalthota Police had launched an investigation into the incident while it was uncovered that the teacher in question, who is in charge of extracurricular activities, had taken the students to the location without obtaining approval from the school’s principal or the zonal education director.

Accordingly, Kalthota Police had arrested the teacher in connection with negligence while she is to be produced before the Balangoda curt today (01).
