Sri Lanka records 44 new COVID deaths; highest toll in a single day

Sri Lanka on Friday (May 21) registered 44 more victims of COVID-19, marking the highest number of deaths recorded in a single day.
The latest fatalities have moved the country’s death toll to 1,132, the, the Department of Government Information stated.
The Department of Government Information stated that the victims had succumbed to the virus infection between the period of May 02 – May 20.
The deceased were identified as residents of Etaweeragollewa, Horampella, Ambalangoda, Kalalgoda, Hindagala, Bulathsinhala, Horana, Galpatha, Kudawaskaduwa, Pihimbuwa, Anuradhapura, Mannar, Rathgama, Imaduwa, Maggona, Mathugama, Veyangoda, Athurugiriya, Sevanagala, Mallewa, Kirimetiyawa, Ihala Katuneriya, Kandy, Paragasthota, Kalutara North, Walallawita, Beruwala, Payagala, Colombo 12, Colombo 02, Polgasowita, Galle, Nakkawatta, Ragama, Pannipitiya, Homagama, Narangoda, Ganepola, Gokarella, Alahitiyawa, Hindagolla and Bandarakoswatta areas.
As per official data, 23 victims in total were aged over 71 years. Eleven victims were in the age group of 61-70 years and seven were aged between 51-60 years. Two victims were aged 40 years and the remaining victim was a 22-year-old female.
COVID pneumonia and complications from chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease have been recorded as the cause of death of the victims.
Government Information Department said 14 females including a 40-year-old pregnant woman were among the deceased.
