SC directs respondents to appoint counsel for Fonseka’s poll petition

The Supreme Court today (March 9) directed the respondents for General (retired) Sarath Fonseka’s petition seeking to nullify the results of the Presidential poll, to nominate their lawyers for the petition to be taken up.
All candidates for the January 26 Presidential election who have been named as respondents, including President Mahinda Rajapaksa have been notified in this regard, said the registrar of the Supreme Court, adding that the date for the petition to be taken up will be notified by the Chief Justice after this process was completed.
General Fonseka who was the candidate for the opposition alliance at the January Presidential poll has filed a petitioning with the Supreme Court urging it to nullify the final results of the same election, claiming that there were abuse and malpractices.
