Police officer arrested while transporting 50kg of heroin

The Organized Crimes Prevention Division has arrested three suspects who were possession of a total of 52 kilograms of heroin, says DIG Ajith Rohana.

The arrests were made during a special operation carried out on Friday (June 18) in the southern parts of the country, especially in Ahangama, Hikkaduwa and Baddegama areas, the police spokesman added.

In addition, the law enforcement authorities have seized 2 vehicles used by the arrestees.

One of them has been identified as a Sub Inspector attached to the Kalutara South police, the police spokesman said.

The police officer in question, who was in uniform at the time of the arrest, was reportedly taken into custody while transporting 50 kilograms of heroin in the area of Hikkaduwa.

The arrestees will be produced before courts and the police intend to obtain 7-day detention order on the suspects in terms of the Poisons, Opium, and Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, DIG Rohana stated further.
