Though the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) is firmly against any sort of foreign interference in the country’s internal affairs, it is also against the dual approach taken by the Government in dealing with international issues, says the party’s General Secretary Tilvin Silva.
While addressing a media briefing at the JVP headquarters at Pelawatta in Battaramulla, he said that the Government was playing a dual role where international issues were concerned by saying one thing to Sri Lankans and another to the international community.
Mr. Silva pointed out that the recent issue regarding UN Secretary General Ban-ki Moon announcing the appointment of a committee to advise him on Sri Lankan affairs, and said that the committee was not to probe the violation of human rights in the country but to review the progress of certain agreements that Sri Lanka reached with the UN after the defeat of the Tigers last year.
The Government was misinterpreting the issue just to get more votes at the upcoming general elections, Tilvin Silva added. He said that the Government earlier stated that it would not beg for the retention of the GSP Plus trade concessions but was now sending a delegation to the European Union to beg for the same concessions.
The Government was also campaigning for a two thirds majority in Parliament at the next general elections promising a change in constitution. But it is yet to announce what sort of constitution it is to present as an alternative. “Will it be another J.R. Jayewardene constitution like the present one, which we want to get rid of right now,” queried Tilvin Silva.
