A UNF Govt. will release Fonseka, give him his due place - UNP

When a United National Front (UNF) government is formed after the general elections, the United National Party (UNP) as the main constituent of the UNF, will arrange for the release of General (retired) Sarath Fonseka, states a media release by the UNP.

This is in the form of an assurance to the public and states that Gen. Fonseka will be released from military custody and given his due place in society.

The UNP also states that the detention of Sarath Fonseka could only be compared to the illegal detention of Myanmar’s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Fonseka has been detained to prevent the challenge to election results and he is a political prisoner, it adds.

Furthermore, actions against those police officers who acted impartially during the Presidential election is a pointer that there is no semblance of democracy under the Rajapaksa regime, says the media release.

The UNP reiterates again and again that Gen. Sarath Fonseka should be released immediately. If there are any allegations against him, they should be dealt with under the civil law of the land. A person who has rendered invaluable service to the nation should not be treated in this way, states the UNP media release.
