Opposition’s love for Fonseka is only for political advantage: Dallas

The Opposition seems to love Sarath Fonseka so much. But the protest held by the United National Party (UNP) demanding the release of the retired General from military custody lasted only 68 hours. If they are so concerned, why did not they continue the protest, asked Transport Minister Dallas Alahapperuma.

Pointing his finger at the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), the main constituent of Gen. Fonseka’s Democratic National Alliance (DNA), Mr. Alahapperuma urged them not to sell Mrs. Anoma Fonseka’s name too for their political advantage.

“They politically assassinated him during the Presidential poll and now they are selling the body for the General Elections,” the Minister alleged.

According to past elections results when the JVP went it alone, it got only a single seat in Parliament. This time too the JVP will get only one seat. If the party loves and respects General Fonseka so much, why don’t they publicly state that they will offer this single seat to Fonseka, Dallas Alahapperuma queried.

Commenting on accusations against President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his close relatives, Minister Alahapperuma said that if the JVP so much as gets a clue on money like that found in Dhanuna Tillekaratne’s mother’s bank locker, the JVP would have gone to town with the matter and would be still protesting near the Fort Railway Station.

This gives the lie to all the accusations and charges to check any vaults belonging to the Rajapaksas, the Transport Minister told the media during a briefing at the Mahaweli Centre this morning (March 15).

Addressing the same media briefing, Jathika Nidahas Peramuna (JNP) leader Wimal Weerawansa said that there was a clear link between Sarath Fonseka’s Presidential poll campaign slogan and that of the war crimes allegations by the United Nations. Fonseka’s slogan was against the alleged Rajapaksa family bandysm and now the UN Human Rights officials too have included these same slogans into their reports, claimed Mr. Weerawansa.

The opposition is in disarray and is accusing the government of resorting to polls violence. The UNP will face certain defeat at the April 8 elections and will record the lowest number of votes in its political history, said United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Colombo district candidate Wimal Weerawansa.
