Two thieves killed in shoot-out with police

Two men on a motorcycle have been shot dead during a shoot-out with the police this evening (Aug. 17).

The incident has taken place in the area of Tissamaharama.

According to the police, the motorcyclist and his pillion rider had ripped off a gold necklace from a woman.

Acting on a tip-off received on the incident, a team of officers attached to the Sooriyawewa Police had given chase to the two thieves.

The duo had opened fire at the police jeep, however, they were later shot dead when the officers returned fire.

In the meantime, three cops have sustained injuries as the police jeep veered off the road when it was attacked during the chase.
