Army Commander General Shavendra Silva, appealing to the general public to adhere to the social measures taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the country, urged them not to misuse the permits issued to essential services during the quarantine curfew period.

Sri Lanka is under a ten-day quarantine curfew from 10.00 pm yesterday (August 20) until August 30 (Monday).

Speaking further, the army chief said the national inoculation drive will be carried on during the quarantine curfew period, targeting the unvaccinated people aged above 60 years.

According to the epidemiology unit’s report on the progress of COVID-19 Immunization, 241,593 people have been vaccinated against COVID-19 yesterday, raising the tally of vaccinations rolled out in the country to 12,073,373. Out of this total, 5,514,315 people have been fully vaccinated.

Reports revealed that a total of 5,289 people over the age of 60 have succumbed to the novel coronavirus infection, since the beginning of the pandemic last year. As per the epidemiology unit’s data, this adds up to 76% of the total number of COVID-related deaths recorded so far in the country.

Reportedly, 1,621 of the coronavirus victims were aged between 30-59 while 75 others were aged below 30 years.
