Election authorities say that all aspiring legislators will be allowed into counting centres when preferential votes are counted.

Ratnapura Senior Assistant Election Commissioner MAPC Perera told the journalists that the unprecedented measure is taken to prevent allegations over discrepancies in the selection of winners.

He also admitted that a small number of applications for postal voting has been rejected due to various reasons.

“Not fully completing the application forms, mistakes by the certifying officer, failing to meet the deadline and applications from those who are not entitled to postal voting have been the reason for the rejection,” he said.

Mr. Perera however stressed that all those whose applications for postal voting have been rejected are entitled to cast their vote on 08 April.

7620 candidates are contesting to be elected as one of the 196 parliamentarians at the general election.
