The Director-General of Health Services says that the programme to vaccinate school children in the age group of 16 – 19 years against Covid-19 will commence tomorrow (October 22) in schools across the island.

Dr. Asela Gunawardena stated that the priority on age category is to be decided by each school.

Provincial and district directors of health as well as the epidemiologists and other health officials under their purview have been given necessary directives on carrying out this inoculation program.

He said that the students in this age group will be administered only one dose of the Pfizer vaccine.

There will be no shortage of COVID shots as stocks required to vaccinate the students have already been distributed to all districts, Dr. Gunawardena added.

Responding to a question on students who have to cross provincial borders to arrive at their schools, the health services chief said such students can get vaccinated from the school closest to their residential area.
