Clinton greets Tamils and Sinhalese on New Year Day

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton today greeted Tamils and Sinhalese in Sri Lanka prepare on the occasion of New Year and said this is an opportunity for them to “renew their bonds” and work together to build a prosperous and democratic nation.

 

 

“This is an opportunity for Sri Lankans of all backgrounds, living inside and outside the country, to renew their bonds and work together to build a prosperous, democratic nation defined by tolerance and respect for human rights,” Clintonsaid in a statement ahead of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year day on Wednesday.

 

 

She said this is the first time in decades that Sri Lankans from all parts of the island can celebrate together in a peaceful and united country.

 

 

“The United States is eager to support you in this journey and to build even stronger ties of friendship between our people,” she said.
