GMOA’s strike temporarily called off

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has decided to call off its strike action temporarily, Ada Derana learns.

The decision was reached at the association’s central committee meeting held today, according to Dr. Samantha Ananda.

The GMOA engaged in a 24-hour token strike on Tuesday at all hospitals and medical institutions in Mannar, Trincomalee, Ratnapura, Nuwara-Eliya and Polonnaruwa districts.

It subsequently resorted to an island-wide strike action the following day, against several issues including political involvement in medical appointments.

The association earlier said it would carry on the strike action until their demands are met.

However, it was reported that they have held a decisive discussion on continuing the strike which left patients stranded at hospitals for four consecutive days.
